Over the last sixteen years Ethan has traveled the world as a producer, music supervisor, arranger, orchestrator, conductor and pianist. He served as associate music director for the Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular (Starring The Radio City Rockettes) in Mexico City as well as music director of U.S. Tour of Forever Plaid before moving to Europe in early 2001. Over the following years in Europe, Ethan conducted and/or music directed Mamma Mia!, Disney’s Aida (for which he later served as music supervisor for the European Tour), QUEEN’s We Will Rock You, and others.
After moving back to New York in late 2005 to assist on the world premiere of Disney’s Tarzan (with music by Phil Collins) and staying with the show throughout it’s New York run, Ethan spent a number of months in Philadelphia serving as music director/pianist for Being Alive, an all-musical revue of the songs of Stephen Sondheim that included arrangements of many of his masterpieces reconceived as R&B, soul, hip-hop, gospel and jazz. The show led to two enormous achievements for him: He became a 2007 Philadelphia Barrymore Award Nominee for Best Music Direction of the show, and was introduced to the show’s beautiful associate costume designer, Vanessa, who later (in late 2009) would become his wife.
Since 2008 Ethan has served as the music supervisor, arranger and orchestrator for Rock of Ages (Off-Broadway, Broadway, U.S. Tour, Toronto, Australia and London productions) for which he also produced the highly-acclaimed Original Broadway Cast Recording, served as music producer, arranger, orchestrator and music supervisor for the pilot of NBC’s television series, “Smash” and became a 2013 Tony® Award Nominee for Best Orchestrations for his work on Broadway’s Motown The Musical (for which he also serves as the show’s music supervisor and arranger). In the summer of 2013 he had the incredible opportunity, with Motown co-orchestrator Bryan Crook, to reconceive some of the show’s arrangements for The National Symphony Orchestra for “A Capitol Fourth” (PBS). Motown also garnished Ethan a 2014 Grammy® Award Nomination for Best Musical Theater Album (as producer of the Original Broadway Cast Recording, along with co-producer Frank Filipetti).
With multiple projects in development in the recording studio as well as for television, film, and theater, Ethan is also currently serving as Music Supervisor and Music Coordinator for the Broadway premiere of Hedwig and The Angry Inch.
